Hand-foot-and-mouth disease is a disease that causes sore in or on the mouth, feet, and sometimes the buttocks and legs. In my sons’ case, it was their legs and mouth. This can be transmitted through direct contact with unwashed hands or a surface containing traces of the virus and young children have the high risk of getting it.
What are the common symptoms?
- a fever – my boys got high fever
- poor appetite – their mouth are swollen and so it’s hard for them to take some food or even drink their milk.
- painful, red blisters in the mouth and their feet
- sore throat
It was their first time to catch the said virus after we played in an open field playhouse in one of the malls here in Cebu. There is no specific medicine for cure, as it normally goes by itself. We just have to support our loved ones as they can have high fever at times.
Their pedia prescribed Kamillosan spray for kuya to minimize the burning sensation. Everytime they get fever, I gave them Calpol strawberry as this is the only flavor they liked. Breastfeeding my bunsoy helped a lot in his endeavor because breast milk contains antibodies that will help fight the virus and bacteria.
There’s really nothing much that we can do but monitor their fever and extend our patience dealing with their mood.
Lesson that I learned in this experience are: Not to play in an open field playhouse especially in summer days.
These days, if we need to have some time out, dinadala ko na sila sa loob ng mall. There are a lot of playhouse or booth na ngayon sa malls. Just make sure lang mommy, to wash their hands after playing. Di ko na rin sila dina dala sa malls or pina pa pasok sa laruan when it’s crowded.
